Abstract:

This webcast will focus on SCA-compliant application development environments and detail the latest major upgrade to PrismTech’s Spectra family of advanced, SCA-compliant SDR development and test environment. Central to the environment is the Spectra DTP4700 radio. The Spectra DTP4700 is a Linux-based, small form-factor platform with low power consumption which is ideally suited to the Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) constraints of the next generation of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) SDR environments. The Spectra DTP4700 comes complete with the SCA 2.2.2 compliant Spectra Core Framework and CORBA compliant Spectra ORB middleware.

Also, the newly released Radio Devices and Services package for the Spectra DTP4700 provides the JTNC standard set of APIs to the Spectra DTP4700 radio devices and services ensuring greater portability of waveforms to target radio systems. Standard interfaces now supported include Audio Port Device, Ethernet Device, Serial Port Device, GPS Device, Frequency Reference Device, Timing Service, and Vocoder Service.

Spectra DTP4700 is fully supported by PrismTech’s market leading Spectra CX tool for SCA component modeling, code generation and compliance validation. Spectra CX code generation eliminates the tedious and error prone process of writing code for all of the standard SCA interfaces.

In addition to the original FM waveform example provided with the system, the Spectra DTP4700 now includes a new SCA compliant data carrying waveform example, including source code and waveform model that used conjunction with the Spectra CX SCA modeling tool.

Dr. Vince Kovarik is Spectra CTO at PrismTech. Wireless Innovation Forum Announces New Training Series

Inaugural course, SDR/SCA Development for Software Engineers begins April 29 2014 with PrismTech Course Instructor

Washington, DC – 11 March 2014 – The Wireless Innovation Forum, a non-profit international industry association dedicated to driving the future of radio communications and systems worldwide, today announced the inaugural course in its new Training Series. “SDR / SCA Development for Software Engineers,” is a comprehensive modular training course providing attendees with both theory and hands-on training required to successfully develop software defined radio (SDR) in accordance with the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) specification. The three week, 12-session course begins April 29.

The course will be delivered online using the latest cloud based teaching techniques, allowing attendees to benefit from the expertise of leading SDR / SCA experts without leaving their desk. Course instructor, Colin Wigham, is Senior Professional Services Consultant at PrismTech with more than 20 years experience in software engineering, distributed systems and SDR.

“We are excited to be working with PrismTech on this inaugural course of our new training series,” stated Lee Pucker, CEO of the Wireless Innovation Forum. “Our intention is to work with recognized leaders in software defined radio, cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access technologies to provide our members and other industry professionals with the training they need to take advantage of new technologies supporting spectrum innovation and to deploy these technologies in support of essential and mission critical communications.”

The course will introduce attendees to SDR / SCA and CORBA middleware and then progress to advanced SDR / SCA programming focused on developing SCA applications and platform services. The training involves the use of modeling tools, Core Framework (CF) and middleware to design, implement and deploy SCA platforms and waveforms.

These tools will be used in conjunction with hands on tutorials provided for each module in the form of a series of comprehensive exercise books, allowing the student to gain practical knowledge in working with the SCA.

The key concepts of SCA operating environments including how an SCA CF is used to manage the deployment of a waveform application are also covered.

The second part of the course builds on the core skills gained in part one and focuses on gaining deeper understanding of the SCA, covering details of the standard, including the specifics of the main component groups and their interfaces. More advanced topics focus on radio platform architecture, GPP-DSP-FPGA integration approaches and middleware optimization.

Attendees should have previous knowledge of or experience with object-oriented design and development, software design and modeling tools using the unified modeling language (UML), C and C++ languages, and common object request broker architecture (CORBA). Attendees are required to have a computer connected to the internet capable of running GoToMeeting and a phone line or VOIP connectivity.

PrismTech Announces Support Plans for Spectrum Signal Processing’s SDR-4000 and SDR-7000 Platforms

New Probes Toolbox to Facilitate Development, Porting and Integration of Software Defined Radio Waveforms

In my Spectra SDR blog today I am highlighting a new product which is being added to our Spectra DTP4700 Development and Test Platform. The Spectra DTP4700 Probes Toolbox is designed to reduce turn-around time for developing new waveforms on Spectra DTP4700 by providing a multi-processor debugging capability during integration.

The Probes Toolbox is a real-time debugging tool with the ability to prove and excite waveform elements, thus allowing the piecemeal integration of waveform components one-by-one, and the validation of component temporal, processor, and memory behaviors independently.  Probe data is visualized either with the toolbox’s internal visualizer, ProbeViz, or through MATLAB/Simulink, thus eliminating the need for additional 3rd-party tooling licenses for data visualization.

The toolbox’s Data Probe allows monitoring or injection of real-time system flow data.  The Resource Probe provides graphical or textual representation of memory and CPU utilization, CPU resources, and allow memory Peeks and Pokes.  The Latency Probe provides a graphical display of latency for user-defined probe points based on a uniform system time reference.  The Traffic Probe captures and displays network traffic.  The SCA Adapter Probe provides latency, traffic and data probes in an SCA-compliant environment.  By using the Probe Toolbox, a developer or systems engineer can thus study real-time data in any connected waveform with ease.

In summary using the Probes Toolbox through the waveform porting cycle: increases engineer productivity, reduces porting and integration effort, decreases defect-error rates, reduces time-to-deploy, and lowers overall project cost and schedule risk.
